Meningitis B Vaccination -Patient information
Meningitis B Vaccination -Patient information
We understand that you may be worried about your child given the meningitis outbreak down in the Kent/Canterbury area.
Please note that the MenB vaccine is not routinely provided on the NHS for adults outside of specific eligibility groups, and we are therefore unable to offer MenB vaccination at the practice for this situation.
The Men B vaccine is not offered to teenagers/young people under the national immunisation programme, unless they are in an “at risk” group (from 2 years of age who are at increased risk of invasive meningococcal infection with asplenia, splenic dysfunction or complement disorders (including those on, or to commence, complement inhibitor treatment such as eculizumab)).
This includes if they missed it or weren’t eligible at the time. There is currently no recommendation for any additional Men B vaccinations for young people.
Men ACWY is routinely offered to children and young people from the age of 14 (Around year 9 or 10 in school), it can be offered up until the age of 25 years old.
If you develop symptoms suggestive of meningitis (such as fever, headache, neck stiffness, sensitivity to light, vomiting, or a rash), please seek urgent medical advice by calling NHS 111 or attending A&E.
Early symptoms can often be confused with other illnesses such as a cold, flu or hangover and students are particularly at risk of missing the early warning signs. If you or anyone you know develops any of these symptoms, seek medical help immediately by contacting a GP, calling NHS 111 or dialling 999 in an emergency. Knowing the signs and taking early treatment can be lifesaving.
Many thanks
